External video links
Use clips you already host, or YouTube and Vimeo videos. They are never counted toward hosted video.
Choose Add a link in Clips, or paste a link in a step's clip picker.
Your own files
Link to an MP4 or WebM over https://. When you add it, PlayStep checks that:
- the link answers (not a 404 or a private file),
- it is a video type browsers play (MP4 or WebM; other types get a warning),
- it is not too large to start quickly (over 2 MB gets a warning).
Your server should allow range requests (most CDNs do) so Safari can play the clip. Clips play from your host directly; PlayStep never proxies them.
YouTube and Vimeo
Paste a normal video link. Embeds show the video's thumbnail and play inline only when the user taps it, so no third-party script loads until then. On Flutter, add playstep_embeds to play them inline.
Health checks
Links are re-checked every day. When one breaks, you get an inbox alert and an email, the clip is marked in Clips, and steps using it show the poster and text instead. Fix the file or replace the clip; the alert clears on the next check.
